Juke Joint Jukebox Show

What a fabulous time today. It rocked and I had a tremendous time. The only thing missing was a cold one. A huge thank you to the callers and e mailers who were listening on the web. The phones were so busy, I could barely keep up.

The playlist is here. If you just got to know what you missed OR you want to know what you heard today. I ran out of time and have lots more music to play so we will probably do a 2nd juke joint show sometime in the future. When you heard me talking about Poor Monkey's Joint today - well this is it.

So, put on your tie-dye and beads and get your groove on with the best cephalopods Arkansas has to offer. Admission is 8 bucks. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts at 8. And leave the kiddies at home.

We're on the National Register!

This press release came to us today from the Arkansas Historic Commission:

SOUTH MAIN STREET RESIDENTIAL HISTORIC DISTRICT LISTED ON NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
LITTLE ROCK—The South Main Street Residential Historic District at Little Rock in Pulaski County has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the country’s official list of historically significant properties, Arkansas Historic Preservation Program Director Ken Grunewald announced today.

The South Main Street Residential Historic District, which runs along South Main between 19th and 24th streets, contains buildings dating to 1880. The district is notable “for its association with the development of Little Rock” and for “its assortment of quality late-nineteenth- and early twentieth century residential architecture, including specifically the Queen Anne, Craftsman and Colonial Revival styles,” the National Register nomination says. “South Main Street Residential Historic District represents the development of the city through the 1940s.”

The house at 2101 South Main where KABF and ACORN are located is within this designated area. It's a pretty two-story Queen Anne style house, which somebody in their infinite wisdom at one time (I'd guess the 1950s) covered partially with cinder blocks on the side facing Main Street. This designation would prevent such an "improvement" from being made today. Thank you Arkansas and the National Register.

(Now if we could just get together and paint the old girl...)

Random Thoughts -

Arkansas Times new section where they take photos of folks in clubs having a great time. I looked at this weekend edition and realized "no black folks go to the Rivermarket area" to the clubs. This sort of puzzled me cuz I thought I had seen them down there before. Yet, somehow, one lone brother snuck into the pic on the top left. He must have been looking for his date, being pretty sure he had brought the only other lady of color down to the market. I helped him look for her and she might be in that kickball picture at the bottom of the page but I can't be sure.

Also, I did not get the memo about partying in the rivermarket area being limited to white young girls with, preferrably blonde, chi straightened hair. OR brown chi straightened hair. Who makes the rules? What happens if you get caught down there with red curly hair - GASP!!!

So obvious the pictures are.... so sadly not a true reflection of the rivermarket scene.

Parrot Beach on Saturday

A benefit for a fellow human - "I am my brother's keeper" (you get the drift).

Here is the info from John Roach on it...

Rusty Baxter, a biker friend of mine got hit from behind while riding his bike. Long story short, he got fired about 2 weeks before this happened and doesn't have insurance and the person that hit him doesn't have insurance. It is at Parrot Beach Saturday,July 7th from 2pm till ???? At least 10 bands (maybe more). Some ofthe bands are Charlotte Taylor, Cosmic Biscuit, Port Arthur, maybe BigJohn Miller and maybe Gil Franklin, still trying to work out all the details.

Donations accepted, of course, and I hear there will be tons of good food. Parrot Beach is on the Old Conway Hwy (McArthur Drive) past Crystal Hill.

Musical Thoughts - Blues

Blues music elicits either love or hate. Funny it does that. I suppose many music genres have that same sort of following. Those that love it and those that hate it. I find it interesting that some of those that proclaim to hate it, love all the derivatives of it - r & b, soul, gospel, rock-n-roll, even country (go back and listen to some old country and old blues).

I am also puzzled by the fact that so many african americans want nothing to do with the music. They seem to feel that if it is not "jazz", then it is not worth listening to. I think, somehow, that jazz has become affiliated with someone being somehow more sophisticated. While the blues, in the african american community, have been relegated to the uneducated, "country" ignorant folks. I see all these people proclaiming jazz as the real deal when, in fact, they are listening to nothing more than jazzified elevator music. Real jazz has soul, feeling and emotion. That watered down crap is just that...watered down so a whole society can somehow feel more sophisticated. These are the same folks who insist on driving a classy car, only owning designer duds, purses and shoes and are just perpetrating sophistication and wealth. I can buy all that, but it does not make me a more sophisticated person now does it?

The blues are the most emotion filled, gut wrenching, hilarious and sad commentary on society. I "pity the fool" who misses out on experiencing this music. Ok, that was my rant.
