My Morning Jacket will celebrate Record Store Day on April 18 with a new live EP. A message from MMJ regarding their forthcoming EP follows:

hello friends. we are proud to announce and release a lil live ep that was recorded right in our very own hometown of louisville, ky. a few songs were taken from our in-store appearence at our beloved and fabled record haven "ear-x-tacy" and a few of them were taken from our concert at the fabled "waterfront park." see if you can guess which is from which. we are excited to make this a special release that you can only get at your favorite local independent record store, as now more than ever we all need to take the time to celebrate what our favorite local record stores and businesses mean to us - the value of community/human to human non- internet related physical and spiritual contact and supporting the hardworking people in your community who strive everyday to keep it unique and keep it local. we are fortunate in our travels to get to see many wonderful things, but one of the most distressing things is the increasing "normalization" of the world and how all these places are starting to look the same- everywhere you look more and more towns are starting to be filled with the same gigantic corporations, and while some of these huge companies undoubtably provide valuable services, it is so important that we realize that it is our local businesses and people (and natural landscapes, but thats a different letter) that are what make different towns worth coming to...things you can only get in one place, made and sold by people who believe in what they are doing...people who are trying to keep good weirdness alive in this crazy dome. god* bless all of you, and god* bless the world and all that kinda sh*t.-yer pals, my morning jacketp.s.- *the word "god*" is used here meaning anything you want it to mean and is a trademark of globo-chem worldwide.

Mali's Tinariwen return to the U. S. for a series of concerts in April 2009. You can experience their amazing live show in the new concert DVD Live In London. Tinariwen will be featured in the Al Jazeera documentary Music Of Resistance. Their widely acclaimed 2007 album, Aman Iman (Water Is Life) on World Village Records, has been issued on vinyl. Dark Was The Night is a various artist compilation produced by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of the band, The National. John Carlin served as executive producer. Carlin is the founder of Red Hot Organization which is an international charity dedicated to raising money and awareness for HIV and AIDS. The album - comprised of 31 tracks - is available as a double cd, triple vinyl set and digital download. The album is on the 4AD label. His churning rhythm guitar was the real birth of rock and roll. Sure, Chuck Berry had the kids twistin' at the hop, but Bo Diddley was one of the first to bridge the gap between blues and rock. He died Monday at age 79.

There are lots of obits out there, but here is a New York Times article about him published five years ago that says more than any obit can.

Utah Phillips

I just learned from David Gans' blog that U. Utah Phillips died a little over a week ago. Wikipedia labels him a labor organizer, folk singer, storyteller and poet. I don't know if he would approve the order, but he sure was all of those.

He wrote letter to his many friends toward the end. You can read it in its entirety here. These are the last four paragraphs:

When I hit a blacklist in Utah in 1969, I realized I had to leave Utah if I was going to make a living at all. I didn’t know anything abut this enormous folk music family spread out all over North America. All I had was an old VW bus, my guitar, $75, and a head full of songs, old- and new-made. Fortunately, at the behest of my old friend Rosalie Sorrels, I landed at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, New York. That seemed to be ground zero for folk music at the time. Lena Spencer, as she did with so many, took me in and taught me the ropes. It took me a solid two years to realize I was no longer an unemployed organizer, but a traveling folk singer and storyteller—which, in Utah at the time, would probably have been regarded as a criminal activity.

I spent a long time finding my way—couches, floors, big towns, small towns, marginal pay (folk wages). But I found that people seemed to like what I was doing. The folk music family took me in, carried me along, and taught me the value of song far beyond making a living. It taught me that I don’t need wealth, I don’t need power, and I don’t need fame. What I need is friends, and that’s what I found—everywhere—and not just among those on the stage, but among those in front of the stage as well.

Now I can no longer travel and perform; overnight our income vanished. But all of those I had sung for, sung with, or boarded with, hearing about my condition, stepped in and rescued us. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to be part of this great caring community that, for the most part, functions close to the ground at a sub-media level, a community that has always cared for its own. We will be forever grateful for your help during this hard time.

The future? I don’t know. But I have songs in a folder I’ve never paid attention to, and songs inside me waiting for me to bring them out. Through all of it, up and down, it’s the song. It’s always been the song.

Sun Ra on Night Air

I just listened to a great send up to the space traveller who was Sun Ra. There is no way you can have Sun Ra explained to you in 25 minutes, but this radio production does a pretty good job scratching the surface. I won't attempt it, but Online Magazine does it here, and the Arkestra keeps the ball rolling fifteen years after his departure from this astral plane.

By the way, the program I refer to is The Night Air. It's a production of ABC, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. I love the show and receive it in the form of a weekly podcast, although individual shows are available as streams or mp3 downloads. The show is usually in the form of audio collage, so is very experimental and exercises the listener's imagination. Check it out when you can.

RiverFest, the tail end

Robert Earl Keen was Sunday's headliner on the Triple S Alarm Stage. He and his band put on a great show, with the audience singing along with nearly every song. They even rocked out on a Jimmie Driftwood song, to everyone's delight.

What I want to know: Whose decision was it to schedule Robert Earl Keen and ZZ Top at the same time?

The old trestle bridge, now a pedestrian bridge, looked like DisneyWorld on Sunday afternoon, what with the long line. Maybe we'll wait 'til next week to cross.

KABF at Riverfest: or We are mellltttiiiingggg

Ok, KABF actually had a booth at Riverfest this year. Right next to the Triple S Alarm Stage where Johnny Lang performed last night. Chad, Diana, Flap, Jody Luv worked the booth during the day. In the evening, Deb, AmyB, Clyde, Marky joined them to help out.
All agreed that it was hotter than hell and the humidity was stifling. We met lots of cool folks and got lots of feedback with the listener survey. We passed out tons of KABF cups and just had a good time.
Chad and Flap emceed the stage all day and evening and did a fine job. Johnny Lang wanted NO introductions. He is still a man child, in my opinion, and his voice is still rather soft. There was a huge crowd to see him though.

The heaviest element yet?

Just Discovered Research has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science. The new element, Governmentium(GV), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons, and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert; however, it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A minute amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from four days to four years to complete.
Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2-6 years. It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.
In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass. When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons. The Dickson St. Music Festival in Fayetteville, AR is set for April 25-26. The Fri. & Sat. concerts will mark the largest 2-day music festival ever staged in Northwest Arkansas, according to the show's organizers. Sonic Youth will headline on Sat., with Michael Franti & Spearhead and Little Feat also scheduled to perform. Shooter Jennings and .38 Special will open for the Charlie Daniels Band on Fri. Great Benefit!!

I am just getting around to posting this, since it has taken me a whole week to recover. We had the Wintertime Blues Bash at Parrot Beach Cafe last Saturday the 23rd. Great lineup of Big John Miller Band, Trouble in Mind, Springwater, Port Arthur Band featuring Gil Franklin and Charlotte Taylor & Gypsy Rain.
The joint was packed!! Lots of fun to be had by all! Lots of dancing and cavorting or was it cavorting and dancing? Flap made a wonderful guitar cake, it was quite yummy. She just don't feel right showing up at Parrot Beach without a cake, I guess.
Big thanks to all who came out. The guitar I altered as an art piece went for $250.00 to Rod Gilstrap who tells me he is changing it to make a lap steel (WTF?)... ok, I mean he did buy it right?
We raised a total of $1,154.00!! What an awesome fun night. (Photos by AmyB)
